Editorial Policy for the ASM Blog
The Network of Alternative Social Media Researchers is an international and growing network of scholars examining alternatives to corporate social media. We conceive of ASM research to include critical analyses of federated social media (e.g., Mastodon and Pixelfed), efforts to develop social media protocols (e.g., ActivityPub, ATProto, Nostr), peer-to-peer applications (e.g., Secure Scuttlebutt), and niche social media catering to specific political perspectives (e.g., Gab). A variety of methodologies is welcome so long as they adhere to the highest ethical standards.
The ASM network maintains an email listserv, social media accounts, a bibliography, and an archive of ASM sites. The members will regularly plan meetups and other networking events.
As part of this program, ASM researchers in the network are welcome and encouraged to write for this blog. Posts on the blog could fall under several broad categories, including:
- Interviews with ASM researchers about their work
- Reviews of research, including ASM research as well as broader academic work
- Discussions of theoretical concepts or methodological approaches to the study of ASM
- ASM research ethics statements
- Conference and event recaps
All posts will be made accessible on the fediverse for comment.
ASM research network members should contact Robert W. Gehl for guidance on writing for the blog.
